Footwell ventilation cable, replace

Remove negative cable from battery. 610024.jpg (37957 bytes)

Non air bag equipped:

Remove three 1/4 turn screws along top edge of panel and one below the steering column 510063.jpg (22743 bytes)
Pull panel forward and out. Remove chime module from bracket in panel by pulling back tabs. 510156.jpg (51767 bytes)

Air bag equipped:

Remove the four 7 mm hex head screws from bottom edge of trim panel. 510143.jpg (54911 bytes)
Remove the three Phillips screws securing trim panel to dash.
Remove trim panel.

Pull horizontal panel down and forward.  Remove chime module wiring connectors or entire module by spreading the plastic clips securing it to the panel. 510148.jpg (54910 bytes)
If necessary, remove the knee bolster by removing two 10mm bolts on left and three 10mm bolts on right side of bolster. 510149.jpg (62083 bytes)
Remove rear console ashtray by lifting straight up, remove screw (arrow ) below ashtray 510001.jpg (35547 bytes)
Remove radio, requires BMW special tool available at any BMW retailer. 650005.jpg (30540 bytes)
Use flat end of tool to open left and right screw covers 650006.jpg (29113 bytes)
Loosen screws until they stop turning 650007.jpg (30530 bytes)
Gently grab radio at cassette door and slide out of opening.
Disconnect wiring from rear of radio.

White arrow is wiring, Red arrow is antenna lead.

Green arrow shows location of serial number. This serial number is required to obtain the CODE from your dealer.

Remove switches and blanks from above radio by pushing out from behind. 650017.jpg (44607 bytes)
Remove 2 screws located behind 2nd and 4th openings. 650018.jpg (55439 bytes)
Pull knobs off vent slides and temp / fan dials. Remove 2 screws in bottom of face plate, (white arrows) accessed from where center console coin tray belongs. 640006.jpg (63836 bytes)
Pull cover plate off vent slides, remove 4 screws behind cover plate. 640007.jpg (48105 bytes)
Pull fascia panel forward.
Remove wiring connector from blower switch and clock/OBC.  Lay face plate aside. 650023.jpg (58006 bytes)
Remove clamp retaining cable to lever housing, and lift cable off lever.
Locate other end of cable on left side of heater housing, remove clamp and disconnect cable by positioning cable at 90° to the actuating lever.

Installation:

Cable sleeve must be fully against the stop before installing retaining clamp at actuating lever end.
Connect the upper end of the cable to the lever before inserting clamp. Push lever to fully closed position, turn the cable sleeve until it fits into the bracket opening and install the clamp.
