The thermostat on an S14 engine is a large assembly located inline with
the lower radiator hose, above the air conditioning compressor on the right side of the
engine. The assembly is sealed and non serviceable.
Drain coolant from radiator. Drain plug is located either in center of
lower tank or on the left lower corner. Drain plug is plastic, do not force. Do not over
tighten.
Disconnect temperature switches if they are located on thermostat.
The wires to the dual
temperature switch (green arrow) often break at the connector. Use this procedure to
repair them.
Loosen the three hose clamps.
Remove thermostat. Removal may be easier if lower radiator hose is totally
removed.
After installation of new thermostat, refill engine with
coolant and run for 2 or 3 minutes with radiator cap off and heater turned to full hot,
this will allow any trapped air to make its way out of the system.
Checking thermostat
Place thermostat in a pot of water and heat.
Thermostat should begin to open at 80± 2° C (176± 3° F).
Full opening of 8mm should occur at 95°C (203° F).
