Coolant Dual Temperature Switch Wiring Repair.   S14

The wires for the dual temperature switch located on the thermostat housing are prone to corrosion and breakage. 610036.jpg (30702 bytes)
When they break, the car is susceptible to overheating as the switch is what controls the auxiliary cooling fan. s140082.jpg (30279 bytes)
BMW produces a wire repair kit, part number 61 13 1 382 248 that consists of 10 sections of wire with the correct female ends already attached to one end.        610029.jpg (20157 bytes)
Cut at least 100mm (~4") from the existing wires to remove any corrosion damaged wire.
Strip 10mm (~3/8") of insulation from the end of each wire. 610037.jpg (24220 bytes)
Place a section of heat shrink tubing over the repair section of wire, sliding it far enough away from the end that heat from the soldering process will not cause it to shrink prematurely.
Solder a repair wire to each harness wire.  Place the heat shrink tubing over the joint and shrink it in place. 610027.jpg (31544 bytes)
After applying heat shrink to each of the three wires, place a larger section over the entire repair. Overlap the existing black insulation and heat to seal.
Open existing plastic connector by prying open locking tabs.  If connector is brittle and breaks during opening, replace it with part number 61 13 1 378 410.
Place the wires in the connector at the following positions :

Pin 1:  Green with Black
Pin 2:
  Black
Pin 3: Black with Brown

Rear of connector is marked with pin numbers.
