Replacing rear crank seal.   S14

Remove transmission
Lock flywheel in place by inserting a pry bar against the ring gear teeth, or by any other means possible.
Remove six bolts retaining pressure plate. 210002.jpg (68938 bytes)
CAUTION: Pressure plate is located on dowels, but may fall off when last bolt is removed.
Remove pressure plate and clutch disc. The pressure plate is the only thing holding the clutch disc, do not drop it when removing the pressure plate.
Lock flywheel with a large screwdriver, or similar.
Remove the eight 17mm bolts securing flywheel. 11gen003.jpg (55389 bytes)
Drain engine oil.
Loosen upper oil pan, completely remove the two 10mm bolts that secure the oil pan to the rear crank cover. (green arrows below)
Free oil pan gasket from cylinder block and rear crank cover with a knife or similar narrow instrument.
Remove four 10mm bolts (green arrows) and two 13mm bolts (blue arrows) from rear crank cover. s140011.jpg (53692 bytes)
Knock seal out of carrier.



Installation

Install new seal in rear crank cover with BMW special tool 11 1 260 and  00 5 500, or use a soft hammer to knock it in evenly.
Install seal approximately 0.5mm below the surface of the cover, so that the seal now runs on a fresh section of the crank.
If oil pan gasket was damaged, remove the upper oil pan and replace the gasket
Apply a small amount of silicone sealer to the rear crank cover before installation, pay special attention to the point where cylinder block, oil pan and cover meet.
Lubricate sealing lip with engine oil before installation.
